One of the most sought after social media platform Twitter announced that while sighting that it will help the tweeters or Twitter users to “easily express themselves”. Twitter is currently having the character limit of 140 characters; hence, it will be doubled to become 280 characters limit. For now this extended character limit will be available for small group of users on trial basis. Twitter said the users who will get to experience the trial of the 280-character tweets will be randomly selected.
The character limit of 140 characters was set inspired by the 160 character limit of SMS. But this was considered a major cause of frustration for many Twitter users. Twitter hopes that this step will not only reduce the fuss, but will encourage the users to tweet more. Also, the Twitter is hoping to get more new users on their platforms, which will diminish the affect of recent slowdown trend seen in Twitter usage.
The idea of extending the limit of characters for Tweets has been discussed internally over a while, in efforts to find ways to encourage more people to use the Twitter more frequently. With 328 million users on platform, Twitter has been questioned for its capability to attract more people. Investors have grown nervous, as that slowing of user growth has affected the revenue of the Twitter.
“Trying to cram your thoughts into a Tweet – we’ve all been there, and it’s a pain,” Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen wrote that in the blog through which the announcement of increasing the characters limit is made. According to her, the longer character limit was being tested in all languages for now except Japanese, Chinese and Korean which she said could convey more information in a single character.
“We understand since many of you have been Tweeting for years, there may be an emotional attachment to 140 characters – we felt it, too.”
“But we tried this, saw the power of what it will do, and fell in love with this new, still brief, constraint.” Aliza Rosen mentioned in the blog.
The founder of Twitter was one of the first users to express his views about 280 characters through a 280 characters limit tweet. He tweeted “This is a small change, but a big move for us. 140 was an arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit. Proud of how thoughtful the team has been in solving a real problem people have when trying to tweet. And at the same time maintaining our brevity, speed, and essence!”
Twitter is expecting that the change could attract more people to tweet more frequently.
“When people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting.” Ms Rosen wrote.
In the end, “Tweets get right to the point with the information or thoughts that matter.” the Twitter
said regarding the 280-character limit test. “That is something we will never change.”
